How to turn Jeans into a Skirt

Skinny jeans have taken over on the fashion front, so I've been adding both skinny jeans and jeggings to my wardrobe.  I still wear bootcut jeans on occasion, but I haven't worn larger flares in quite some time.  What do you do with jeans that make your @ss look great, but have much too big flares at the bottom?  Turn them into a skirt of course.(Look how brave I'm getting since I made that first skirt!)

Here's how I made this skirt.  I grabbed some jeans that fit nice, but had a way too wide flared leg.  It's almost a baby bell.

I cut the legs off at just above the knee.

Turn the jeans(now shorts) inside out.

If you can find your seam ripper and feel like taking the time to do it, rip out the inseam.  I couldn't find mine, so I just cut out the inseam.  I lost a little bit of fabric, but I'm adding a pretty fabric insert anyway, so who cares?  In the front, you want to cut to almost the zipper, and in the back cut as far as it takes to lay flat.

I picked out some fabric from my never ending fabric stash.  Remember this prety pink fabric from my Valentine's rag wreath?  Still have some.

I turned and pressed the open edges and pinned the front as flat as I could make the former crotch area with a triangle of the accent fabric pinned to the turned edges.

I topstitched using a coordinating pink thread, did the same to the back, turned the bottom hem, and topstitched that.  This whole skirt took less than an hour, and was both an upcycle, and a stashbuster project.  I love the way that this turned out.

Thanks for popping in and sewing with me.  I'm linking this up to Just a Girl's Show & Share Day.

  3. I can't believe these are coming back!! Early to mid-70's they were so in. I think I only had one pair turned into a skirt, and rarely wore it. Wasn't a dress/skirt kinda tween.

  6. Like Allison, I remember this from my junior high days. :-) Once you've been through it once, I don't think it will work again...But maybe for my princesses.

  7. I love it, what is so funny is I am a child of the 70's when huge bellbottoms were in so we all cut part way up the bottom of the outside of the leg and inserted fabric so we could make bell bottoms out of our straight leg jeans....styles just keep cycling!!

  15. Happy Pink Saturday! A long time ago, I used to add insets of fabric to my jeans at the side seam. I'd seen skirts made but didn't know how it's done. Pretty cool, and pretty. Happy Pinks! Jenn
