I love Craigslist

Remember when I redecorated Snuggle Bunny's room here?  His room was missing a key piece of furniture.  He didn't have a bedside table.  Well today, I braved the snow to go pick up this little guy today.  For $5.

He's a bit dusty and has all the markers of being well used, but he's incredibly well built.  All wood construction.  Dovetailed joinery.  The drawer front is rabbeted, then dovetailed to the drawer box, not applied to a separate box.
I found this stamp on the inside of the drawer.

A quick google search shows other Kroehler MCM sidetables and nightstands going for $150-$400, but those are in mint condition and I'm not looking to make money off this little nightstand.  I'm looking for a place for SB to put his "good night drink" (glass of water.)

So I have plans to give this little table a good sanding, then prime and paint it.  Normally when I bring home a treasure, I immediately start in on it.  This table has me a bit stymied, though.  I'm not sure what to do about the handle.  I originally planned to buy some new hardware or make a new handle(I was thinking maybe taking one of those little toy skateboards and epoxying it onto a flat handle,) but the drawer has one of those recessed handles that's routed into the door.  What do you think I should do?  Keep the handle and paint over it?  Or try to remove it, fill the void with a wood patch, then paint and put a new handle on?

Thanks for popping in and checking out my Craigslist find.  I'm linking this up to A La Carte's Junking Finds Friday and House of Grace's Twice Owned Tuesday.

  1. $5! Woo hoo! You scored! I honestly kind of like the little handle. Goes with the style of the piece. I can't really tell how big it is from the photo, but it looks to have a little slot, perfect for a tag. I'm trying to think of something cute to print on it but I don't know how old your son is. If it was one of mine, I'd probably write the word "junk" or "pocket change." Just an idea. I'm sure whatever you come up with look great! It's really a neat little night stand!

  2. What a cute nightstand! I love the shape and also think the handle fits it. Still maybe something attached over it if your son would do better with a handle to pull out the drawer. Still it's very cute. Thanks for joining this weeks JFF! hugs, Linda

  3. Thanks so much for the compliments! I love Tammy's idea of placing a tag in the handle. I'll start sanding this weekend. Can't wait to give this little piece a new life.

  4. Great piece and a good brand. The handle is integral and I wouldn't change it at all. Just get in there with a sanding sponge and it should be fine in no time. Also I'm thinking it would be way less work to sand at throw on some tung oil or Watco Danish oil than 3 coats of paint. It's oak and should look just fine for a boys room au naturel. Thanks for stopping by. Jane
